The Diedrichsburg Wildlife Park (also Meller Wildpark or Wildpark Ostenwalde , colloquially wild boar park or Sauenpark ) is a wildlife park and hunting reserve in the area of the town of Melle in the Meller Mountains , a low mountain range of the Wiehengebirge in Lower Saxony , not far from the border with North Rhine-Westphalia . With a size of 200 hectares, the wildlife park encompasses around a fifth of this ridge. The central contact point of the wildlife park is the Diedrichsburg , where a café-restaurant is operated.
The park belongs to the lands of the nearby Ostwalde manor , which is privately owned by the von Vincke family . The wildlife park was set up by Baron von Vincke in 1963 with financial support from the Melle district, the city of Melle and the Nördlicher Teutoburger Wald-Wiehengebirge Nature Park Association .
The wildlife park is predominantly forested, only in the very north at the park boundary there are two open areas with a total of around three hectares. The area is between 139 meters in the north and 218 meters at the Diedrichsburg above sea level.
135 hectares of the wildlife park are fenced. There are no fences or gates apart from the fencing around the park; there are no smaller enclosures within the park. The wildlife park therefore does not convey the character of a zoo or animal park in the conventional sense, but rather that of a natural area in which the visitor can move freely among and with the wild animals or can explore the area on hiking trails "criss-cross".
The fenced off area is home to fallow deer , mouflons and wild boars , although the high number of wild boars is known to the public. The park attracts many visitors, especially in spring, when the brooks have thrown fresh babies. In contrast to the wild, wild boars, including wild sows with pups a few days old, are often trusting and can be approached within a few steps.
