The village of Wileren (also Willeren) is located in the Swiss Binntal and is now part of the municipality of Binn . It is located less than a kilometer southwest of the main town Schmidighischere, on the other (southern) bank of the Binna. The settlement consists only of the parish church and a few irregularly arranged rows of houses.

history

The village has always been part of the Binn valley and shares its political and ecclesiastical history with it.

Wileren was first mentioned in a document in connection with the delivery of the baptismal font and the bells for the parish church in 1298.

Attractions

The parish church was rebuilt between 1561 and 1565 taking into account the previous building. The previous building was from the 13th century. It is known that in 1298 the Binn valley received a baptismal font and bells for the church in Wileren and that a cemetery was laid out. After the church had been redecorated and vaulted in the 17th century , the church and the altar were consecrated on July 28, 1678 by Bishop Adrian V. A major renovation was carried out in 1880. During the next renovation between 1918 and 1920, the paintings were changed by Julius Salzgeber from Raron. New glass windows with figure panes from the Munich company Franz Xaver Zettler were also installed. At the same time the organ loft was enlarged. In 1927 the breast panel was replaced and the sacristy was renovated between 1935 and 1936. Between 1958 and 1963 the church was completely renovated by the architect Amédée Chachin from Brig. He was supported by the then President of the Federal Preservation of Monuments, Professor Alfred A. Schmid. During the renovation, the building was damaged by an earthquake on March 24, 1960. However, this damage could be repaired. During this renovation, two 13th century frescoes were also uncovered.
