Wilfred George Lambert

Wilfred George Lambert (born February 26, 1926 in Birmingham ; † November 9, 2011 ) was a British ancient orientalist and Near Eastern archaeologist .

Life

Lambert held a chair at the Oriental Seminary at Johns Hopkins University from 1959 to 1964 , before taking up the professorship at the University of Birmingham in 1970 . A year later he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy . During his time in Birmingham, he was particularly involved in the deciphering of cuneiform clay tablets in the British Museum . After his retirement in 1993 he worked on inscriptions on the seals as part of the British Museum's cataloging project for Near Eastern seals. Together with Irvin Finkel (* 1951), he also succeeded in identifying fragments of clay tablets that reproduced the text of the Cyrus cylinder . His scientific work also included participating in the CAD project as an external consultant. He became particularly well-known through his discoveries while researching the Gilgamesh epic . He was also a presenting member of the International Congress for Assyriology and Near Eastern Archeology.

As a member of a Christadelphian congregation , Lambert refused to use the weapon during World War II and instead supervised Italian prisoners of war at work in a nursery north of Birmingham . He also published their quarterly magazine for his congregation.

In 1984 Lambert served as President of the Society for Old Testament Study .
