Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

Solution:

White must try to move his king away from the 8th row and thus checkmate.

1. Kf8 (threatens Kxe7 mate) Re1
2. Be6 Re1xe6
3. Kg8 Th6
4. Kxg7 mate

3.… Qh4 is followed by 4. Kxf7 mate.

The move 2. Be2 fails because of Qf6.
