Wilfried Reuter (born August 13, 1952 ) is a Buddhist teacher in the Theravada tradition . He heads the Lotos Vihara Meditation Center in Berlin-Mitte and worked as a resident gynecologist in Berlin-Kreuzberg .

biography

Wilfried Reuter grew up on a farm in Northern Hesse. After graduating from high school in Bad Arolsen in 1971, he studied medicine in Bochum and Berlin from 1973 to 1979. After working as an assistant doctor and senior doctor in Berlin clinics, he settled in 1989 in Berlin-Kreuzberg as a gynecologist. He has experience in obstetrics and terminal care .

Path to Buddhism

Wilfried Reuter's interest in spiritual issues began early. From childhood on, on his parents' farm, he was directly involved with the painful aspects of life. He saw animals become sick and die or be killed, watched the cats catch the mice, and felt pity. When he was 18, his mother died. These experiences raised questions about the meaning of life.

In the 1970s, Wilfried Reuter looked for a spiritual home in Christianity and Judaism , but found only partial answers to his questions there. He practiced with the Sufis (the Islamic mystics) and eventually practiced Zen meditation for 15 years . While traveling to India in the 1980s, he came across the first answers. He was particularly impressed by Mahatma Gandhi's life 's work . Wilfried Reuter describes the Indian sage Sri Ramana Maharshi as his first spiritual teacher , who can be attributed to the spiritual direction of Advaita-Vedanta . His explanations of the non-duality fascinated him.

The decisive step on the way to Buddhism was Reuter's meeting with Ayya Khema , a German Buddhist nun of the Theravada tradition , in the early 1990s . In her he found an authentic teacher who herself had walked the path she taught.

Initially, a meditation group founded by Reuter in 1997 met in the waiting room of his doctor's practice in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In the same year “Lotos-Vihara eV - Association for Meditation and Encounters” emerged from the group. Shortly afterwards he found rooms on Wrangelstrasse in Kreuzberg. This first center became too small for the community of Buddhist practitioners after a few years.

In 2007, under the direction of Reuter, the Lotos-Vihara meditation center opened in a former daycare center near Alexanderplatz in Berlin-Mitte. It is supported by the specially established Anjali Foundation. Wilfried Reuter teaches the Buddha- doctrine there in lectures, courses and groups. There are special offers for doctors and psychotherapists, pregnant women and people with cancer experience.

Alignment and teaching approach

Wilfried Reuter's teaching is based on Theravada Buddhism, recorded in the Pali Canon , the earliest written collection of Buddhist discourses. Reuter also integrates elements of other Buddhist traditions, such as Tibetan Buddhism, into his teaching. He combines the traditional Buddhist knowledge with psychological knowledge and his experiences as a doctor, obstetrician and dying companion. He values clear, practicable instructions, which he describes as "cookbook-like".

In 2010, Edition Steinrich Wilfried Reuters published his first book, "Awake the Buddha in you - Paths to Inner Strength", in which he deals with how one can develop sources of strength through Buddhist practice.

Wilfried Reuter gives courses in Germany and also gives lectures in non-Buddhist locations, for example in Berlin's Urania .
