From his father Otto he received the dignity of arch chaplain, from which later the arch chancellor for Germany developed, which remained connected to the archbishop's chair in Mainz until the end of the archbishopric in 1803. Around 960 Wilhelm founded the Augustinian Canons' Monastery near St. Martin in Heiligenstadt . He died in Rottleberode in 968 and was buried in the Albans Basilica, the forerunner of St. Alban's Abbey near Mainz .
