Wilhelm (Schwerin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm († 1249 ) was canon from 1222 to 1239 , provost of Schwerin from 1240 to 1246, and bishop of the Schwerin diocese from 1248 to 1249 .

Life

The successor to Bishop Dietrich was Provost Wilhelm from Schwerin. The election took place before March 17, 1248, possibly also confirmation by Archbishop Gerhard von Bremen . On May 15, 1248 Wilhelm referred to himself as elects et confirmatus, on May 16 he swore the oath of fidelity to his Archbishop in Schwerin and called himself Episcopus for the first time in the document. One can see this day as episcopal ordination .

The Schwerin Cathedral was consecrated by Bishop Wilhelm with the assistance of the Bishops of Verden , Lübeck and Cammin on Viustage, June 15, 1248. The visitation protocol from 1625 reads: In 1248, Wilhelmus the fifth bishop of Schwerin inaugurated the cathedral in Schwerin on the day of Viti in the first year of his reign.

On September 16, 1248, he also managed to establish the foundation of the monastery chapter at the St. Elisabeth parish church in his residence town Bützow .

It can be assumed whether his memorial foundation on August 21, 1249 can already be interpreted as his approaching death, or whether it was already part of his will. After all, on November 5, 1249, his death at the papal court was already known and the election of a successor was in preparation.

The exact day of his death, the place and the burial place are not known.

seal

In the seal, Bishop Wilhelm carried the image of a seated bishop with the crook pointing inwards in his left hand and an open beech tree in his outstretched right hand.

The inscription reads: + WILHEHELMUS: DEI: GRACIA: ZWERINENSIS: EPC
