Wilhelm Benecke (plant physiologist)

Wilhelm Benecke (born September 23, 1868 in Heidelberg , † February 14, 1946 in Soldorf ) was a German plant physiologist , botanist and university professor.

Life

He was the son of Ernst Wilhelm Benecke and his wife Emilie (1846-1922) and was born in the house at Ziegelhäuser Landstrasse 1 in Heidelberg. His mother was Max Weber's aunt . After finishing school, Wilhelm Benecke studied at the universities of Berlin and Jena . At the latter university he received his doctorate in 1892 for Dr. phil. In 1896 he completed his habilitation at the University of Strasbourg . In 1900 he became titular professor at the Botanical Garden of the Philosophical Faculty of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . In 1907 he was appointed associate professor for botany at the University of Kiel. Two years later, Wilhelm Benecke accepted the call as associate professor for botany at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . It stayed there until 1911, when he moved to Berlin as an associate professor at the university. On April 1, 1914, he was appointed professor at the Agricultural University in Berlin. After the outbreak of World War I, he took the opportunity to go to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster as a full professor in October 1916 , where he was also director of the Botanical Institute and the garden. During his time in Munster he could be reached in house Keuztor 5 . At the end of September 1935, Wilhelm Benecke was released from his duties at the age of 67.
