Wilhelm Christian Gmelin

Wilhelm Christian Gmelin (born September 30, 1684 in Botnang , † April 3, 1746 in Iptingen ) was a German clergyman .

Life

Wilhelm Christian Gmelin was born as the son of Johann Wilhelm Gmelin . In 1703 he obtained the degree of master's degree . Like his brother Sigmund Christian Gmelin , he joined the Pietists and radicalized himself under the influence of literature critical of the church. Because of his criticism of the teaching of the church in two of his writings, he was dismissed from church service as vicar in Holzgerlingen in 1708. He later returned, was appointed pastor adjunct in Ochsenbach in 1717 and appointed pastor there in 1723 . In 1738 he took over the pastor's position in Iptingen. He held this office until his death on April 3, 1746 at the age of 61; he had no children although he was married.

Gmelin, who also hymns composed, established a foundation for poor students in Iptingen.

In Iptingen the linen weaver Johann Georg Rapp worked as a leader and organizer of the Württemberg separatists from 1785 .
