Moriz Gmelin

Moriz Gmelin (born July 20, 1839 in Ludwigsburg , † December 14, 1879 in Karlsruhe ) was a German archivist .

Life

Moriz Gmelin studied Protestant theology at the Blaubeuren seminar and at the Tübingen monastery . From 1861 he worked as a vicar in Oberstenfeld . Three years after that he became a teacher at a school in Friedrichsdorf . From 1865 he was a volunteer in the court library in Karlsruhe , shortly before that the University of Tübingen had awarded him the theological doctorate . In 1868 he became parish administrator in Unterriexingen , but he gave up the position the next year.

He devoted himself to an activity as an assistant at the grand ducal Baden General-Landes-Archiv in Karlsruhe, three years later he was appointed assessor , and in 1874 he was promoted to archivist . During the war of 1870/71 Gmelin also helped with the German Red Cross .

Gmelin worked on the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie and contributed ten articles, nine of them about important members of the Gmelin family .
