from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Deuss (born July 3, 1827 in Krefeld , † December 22, 1911 there ) was a German entrepreneur in the textile industry .

Life

Wilhelm Deuss was born in 1827 as the son of a baker and innkeeper on the Krefeld Schwanenmarkt. Together with Albert Oetker (from the Krefeld branch of the Oetker family ) he founded the mechanical silk weaving and cloth factory Deuss & Oetker (from 1920 part of the Vereinigte Seidenwebereien AG (Verseidag) ) in the 1880s . In this constellation, Deuss was considered an excellent silk expert and buyer, his partner Oetker as a forward-looking businessman . The factory on the edge of Schiefbahn turned the village, which was characterized by agriculture and house weaving, into a modern industrial location, which became one of the wealthiest communities on the Lower Rhine.

The Krefeld city forest goes back to a Deuss foundation in 1897 on the occasion of his 70th birthday. To start the construction work, he added 20,000 marks in cash to the donation in kind of 35 hectares . In 1910 Deuss donated another substantial sum to expand the forest area.

As a sign of gratitude, the “Deuss Temple” has stood opposite the Stadtwaldhaus at the Stadtwaldweiher since 1913, and the road on the northern end of the city forest is also called “Deussstrasse”.

His grave of honor is in the old part of the main cemetery (field A, no. 137–140).
