Wilhelm Ernst (geologist)

Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Ernst (born February 23, 1888 in Witten an der Ruhr, † March 2, 1953 in Hamburg ) was a German geologist , mineralogist and paleontologist .

Wilhelm Ernst came from a family of teachers, passed his matriculation examination in Witten in 1906 and studied chemistry first , then geology and paleontology in Göttingen . In 1912 he came to the Mineralogical-Geological Institute in Hamburg . He mainly researched the deposits from the Cretaceous Period in northern Germany and was known for precise, thorough work. In 1926 he became curator of the institute and in 1933 professor.

Ernst was married to Johanne Karoline Elisabeth Clara Ernst, geb. Theaters (* July 8, 1894 in Hamburg; † December 18, 1955). One of their three children was the future geologist Gundolf Ernst . In 1932 the family moved from Hamburg to Ahrensburg , where they came into contact with the archaeologist Alfred Rust .
