The Alte Elster and Rohrbornwiesen nature reserve is located between the towns of Premsendorf and Arnsnesta in the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt . The approximately 212 hectare area lies on both sides of the Black Elster and was established as a nature reserve on February 6, 1998. The nature reserve has been confirmed by the European Union as an FFH area and is also located in the EU bird sanctuary Annaburger Heide.

Protection goal

The protection goal is the "preservation of a diversely structured, in large areas near-natural, water and wetland rich floodplain area of the Black Elster with occurrence of numerous endangered animal and plant species."

description

The straightened river course of the Black Elster divides the area into two roughly equal halves. In addition to the diked river, on both sides there are the old waters separated by the dykes, which still show the formerly strongly meandering course of the Black Elster. The Rieke body of water near Premsendorf is used for recreational purposes and is partly looked after by a fishing club. The areas of the nature reserve between the towns of Premsendorf and Arnsnesta are primarily used for grazing purposes. The part of the area on the left side of the Black Elster is mostly on the Annaburg Heath . Due to the location in the restricted area of the part of the Annaburger Heide used as a training area, adverse effects from tourism and agriculture are excluded here. The Jüterbog – Röderau railway line runs through the nature reserve .

flora

Today's river course of the Black Elster is overgrown with reeds (Phalaridetum arundinaceae) and reeds (Phragmitetum australis). On the partly heavily silted oxbow lakes, there are mainly shrub willow bushes, cattail and brook reeds as well as pond horsetail in the bank areas. Typical representatives of the fen and marsh plant community have developed in the Rohrborn and Luchwiesen in the western part of the nature reserve. In the nature reserve there is a wild pear designated as a natural monument in the Annaburg Heath.

fauna

kingfisher

In addition to the Elbe beaver, which can often be found, the nature reserve offers a habitat above all for bird species such as teal, little grebe, marsh harrier and reed warbler. Little ringed plovers, kingfisher and great reed warbler can be found along the course of the Black Elster . As a representative of the fish in the oxbow lakes, the mud whip is a species worth mentioning.
