The banks of the oxbow lake are lined with narrow strips of reed made of reed grass and slender sedge . Swan flower , swamp lily and water swamp cress settle here . In shallow stretches of water, swaths of reed and calamus can be found. The grassland areas are intensively cultivated. They are quite poor in species.

The flat mud flats are the feeding habitat of a species and individual rich Limikolen fauna . The nature reserve is also a feeding habitat for white and black storks and gray herons . During the bird migration it is of particular importance as a resting area for numerous ducks, geese, swans and gulls as well as golden plovers and lapwing. Also cranes use the area as a resting and gathering area. Sometimes cranes can also be seen here throughout the summer.

The Old Elbe is also habitat and spawning ground for various species of amphibians , including fire-bellied toad , common toad , toad , frog , green frog , frog and newt . Furthermore, numerous dragonflies live here , including the southern mosaic maiden , grasshoppers , z. B. the marsh insect and butterflies , such as the aurora butterfly .

The nature reserve is bounded by a flood dike. This is partly followed by fields and further grassland areas to the north and south.
