The Schönitzer lake is mostly of reeds and sedge from reed , broadleaf cattail , Ästigem bur-reed , water vapors , Schlanksegge and reed canary grass surrounded. Furthermore, here settle spearwort , Scheinzypergrassegge and Flowering . Moist herbaceous vegetation adjoin the reeds . Incidentally, the areas in the nature reserve are characterized by grassland with species-poor bedstraw-foxtail societies and, in small areas, species-rich Schmielen-Silau societies. On the banks of Radehochsees also falter remnants of alluvial forests , alder forests and gray willows.

The Schönitzer See is the habitat of the Elbe beaver . The reed zones along its banks offer numerous bird species a suitable habitat, including grebes , Pochard , reed warbler , reed warbler and sedge warbler , all also breed here. Furthermore, the lake with the surrounding grassland has a supra-regional importance as a resting and wintering area for water birds .
