The approx. 145 ha large Schönitzer See is a lake in Saxony-Anhalt ( Germany ) near the Riesigk district of the city of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz ( Wittenberg district ).
The Schönitzer See is only a few meters deep and is 62 m above sea level. NN . It is the most outstanding natural area in the district and is drained via the Elbe in a northerly direction into the North Sea.
The lake is a former oxbow lake of the Elbe. It is divided into three sections by the road to the Riesigker district of Schönitz, from which the name is derived, and by the Neuer Wall flood dike . The section north of the Neuer Wall belongs to Wörlitz . The lakes in Wörlitzer Park can also be supplied with additional water via a ditch created in the 1970s .
The Elbe Cycle Path on or on the Neuer Wall leads through the Elbe on the northern edge of the Riesigk municipality.
As an oxbow lake of the Elbe, it is a eutrophic shallow lake that has silted up heavily in recent decades. Reeds, meadows and fragments of alluvial forest line its banks. The southern part is located in Riesigk, outside the floodplain of the Elbe. The northern part is called Radehochsee and is regularly flooded by floods. The river ditch, which mostly comes from the Dübener Heide , flows through this part of the lake before it flows into the Elbe at Wörlitz. This situation, as well as the use of the land, have a decisive influence on the composition of the relatively species-rich fauna and flora of the area. To the west of the lake there are eight artificially raised hills that serve to protect against flooding, in particular to protect the nearby flood dike from heavy ice. They are also known as wild mountains as they serve as rescue mounds during floods. On the northernmost hill there is a memorial stone in direct line of sight to the Wörlitzer Park.
In 2002 this area was also hit by the floods of the Elbe . After the dike broke near Rehsen, the Schönitzer Luch was also flooded. Extensive dyke construction measures that were subsequently carried out have protected this area since then, so that there was no renewed flooding during the floods in Central Europe in 2013 .
The lake is located in the nature reserve Schönitzer See in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . The lake is also known for its abundance of fish. There are eels , perches , pikes and catfish in the lake.
