The river ditch is a stream in the Düben Heath .

It arises near Wachsdorf from the confluence of several receiving waters . The entire stream system around the river ditch drains large parts of the heath over the Elbe into the North Sea .

The Kemberger Flieth (also called Fliethbach) with its feeding streams, which come from the southern Dübener Heide (area around Reinharz ), has a significant share . In the Dübener Heide area, a large number of water mills (including Gassmühle, Kapphahnsmühle, Grubels Mühle, Pannewitzer Mühle, Gottwaldsmühle, Sackwitzer Mühle (now a hotel), Rote Mühle, Heidemühle) were powered. In some cases, reservoirs were created for this purpose.

Between Wörlitz and Vockerode it flows into the so-called Riss and then into the Elbe.

The course of the river ditch between Seegrehna (Burgstall) and Schönitzer See (Radehochsee) was significantly changed by dike construction work after 1928. Originally it flowed through Rehsener See and Schönitzer See. The material for the dyke construction of the so-called New Wall was taken from the newly created stream bed for the river ditch that now runs parallel to it. A pumping station was built at the Burgstall to keep water levels out when the Elbe floods .

After the Elbe floods in 2002 , the dykes to the Elbe were raised and built according to standards. Between Seegrehna and Selbitz , a barrage and another pumping station were built in the river ditch to prevent the water from flowing back.
Two weirs in the Elbe near Wörlitz were dismantled.
