The Bergwitzsee is the open pit of the mine Bergwitz . The name is derived from the nearby town of Bergwitz . The water has a very good bathing water quality .

The lake is located in the north of the terminal moraine area of Graefenhainichen-Schmiedeberg , the Dübener Heide , in Saxony-Anhalt .
Emergence
In 1955, lignite mining in the Bergwitz open-cast mine was stopped. In the 1960s, the dump was recultivated and the embankments designed. At the same time, the remaining hole was flooded by the natural inflow. The lake is fed by groundwater and rainwater . It drains into the river ditch via an overflow structure .
use
The lake is used as a leisure and recreation area. There is a campsite and holiday bungalows by the lake. The lake is popular for diving. The European cycle route R1 and the Berlin – Leipzig cycle route pass the lake. The Bergwitz Triathlon has been held annually since 1991 , a popular sports triathlon over the sprint distance.
