The approx. 10 ha large Crassensee is a lake in Saxony-Anhalt ( Germany ) near the Seegrehna part of the city of Lutherstadt Wittenberg ( Wittenberg district ).
The Crassensee is only a few meters deep and is at an altitude of 64 m above sea level. NN . It is the most outstanding natural area in the Crassensee nature reserve and is drained via the Elbe in a northerly direction into the North Sea. The lake is a former oxbow lake of the Elbe.
The Elberadweg leads along the eastern edge of the nature reserve.
As an oxbow lake of the Elbe, it is a eutrophic shallow lake. Riparian forest, reed beds and meadows line its banks. In the south of the lake the remains of a former flood dike can be seen. This former dike ( called Bärenwall ) ends at Wörlitz and is characterized by numerous fractures.
Only at a water level of 5.20 meters at the Wittenberg gauge is the area around the Crassensee flooded by the high water of the Elbe. In 2002 this area was also hit by the floods of the Elbe after a dike breach near Seegrehna. In the event of flooding , in addition to the normal drainage via the Leetze and Leetzegraben, the water also drains via the original drain, the Wesselfließ . The so-called Zucker-Brücke leads over Leetze and Leetzegraben .
