The Schwarze Elster-Kuhlache is a nature reserve in the town of Jessen (Elster) in the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0188 is 187 hectares . The previous nature reserves “Ritterburg” and “Kuhlache” have merged into it. The nature reserve is partly part of the FFH areas "Kuhlache and Elsteraue near Jessen", "Annaburger Heide water system southeast of Jessen" and "Schweinitzer Fließ". In the north it borders in parts on the landscape protection area "Arnsdorfer-Jessener-Schweinitzer Berge". The area has been under protection since 1999 (date of regulation: May 19, 1999). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Wittenberg district.
The nature reserve is located directly southeast of Jessen (Elster). It protects a section of the Black Elster lowland a little below Schweinitz to the railway bridge crossing the lowland in Jessen (Elster) as well as the "Kuhlache" south of the lowland and separated from it by a dike, a fen and swamp area . To the east of the reserve, the Black Elster south is a separate by a dike from her old arm .
In the nature reserve, the Schwarze Elster flows through a damp lowland landscape with grassland , sedge beds , reed beds and tall herbaceous vegetation . The Elster Altarm is often accompanied by willow bushes. Frog-bite societies as well as crab claws and pond roses settle in it .
The nature reserve is the habitat of the Elbe beaver . The valley of the Black Elster accommodates u. a. Little Ringed Plover , Common Sandpiper , Kingfisher and Great Reed Warbler . The Elster old arm is the habitat of the little grebe , teal duck , water rail and marsh harrier .
