Saarenbruch-Matzwerder is a nature reserve in the cities of Coswig (Anhalt) and Oranienbaum-Wörlitz in the district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0095 is about 354  hectares . 97 hectares of the nature reserve are designated as a total reserve and left to develop naturally. The nature reserve is part of the FFH area “Dessau-Wörlitzer Elbauen” and the EU bird sanctuary “Middle Elbe including Steckby-Lödderitzer Forest”. The area, which almost completely from the conservation area surrounded "Middle Elbe", is since the end of 2003 under protection (date of the Regulation: December 15, 2003). The "Saarenbruch" nature reserve, which was designated on May 1, 1961, was incorporated into it. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Wittenberg district.

The nature reserve, which consists of two partial areas, is located between Roßlau and Coswig (Anhalt) in the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve . It places three oxbow lakes of the Elbe , Kurzer Wurf and Alte Elbe as well as Saarensee with the surrounding ravines under protection. Two areas with agricultural land and a homestead, which are completely within the nature reserve, are excluded from the scope of the nature conservation ordinance.

Kurzer Litter and Alte Elbe are accompanied by trees on the bank. The short litter is still connected to the Elbe, it is subject to the natural flow dynamics. On the island formed by the meandering river, there are small swamp forests . Other areas are occupied by grassland . The short litter is followed by other quarry forests that create a connection to the Old Elbe. The old Elbe is separated from the river dynamics of the Elbe by dykes. The Katschbach flows into it, which also drains the Old Elbe via a pumping station for a short throw. The banks of the Old Elbe and its silting zones are occupied by reed beds with reeds , pond rushes, swaths of water , horsetail and vineyards designed as Schlankseggenried and Glanzgrasried . Furthermore, in the area of ​​the Old Elbe there are small-scale remains of a hardwood alluvial forest with oaks, ash trees and elms.

Laichkraut societies, crab claw societies and floating leaf societies with water nut (with particularly rich occurrences in the Saarensee) and pond rose settle in the oxbow lakes . Furthermore, water float societies with pond lenses, swimming ferns, common water hose and star moss settle. In Saarensee also is source moss to find.

The Saarensee in the north of the nature reserve is located directly on the Seeberg, which slopes down to the Elbe valley on a steep slope. It is fed by groundwater and from hillside springs as well as a ditch and drained to the Old Elbe. Pine forests and a hornbeam-elm hillside forest grow on the Seeberg and its steep slope. In the area of ​​the hillside springs, alder and alder forest grows. The lake is of Erlenbruchwald and alder elm Bruchwald and vineyards with water hemlock , Thelypteris palustris , Carex paniculata , Scheinzypergrassegge and swamp Calla , which in moist Staudenfluren pass surrounded.

The nature reserve is the habitat of numerous birds. Here are e.g. B. warbler , reed warbler , sedge warbler , reed warbler , barred warbler , Beutelmeise , Long-tailed Tit , Whinchat , shrike , common snipe , lapwing , marsh harrier , barn owl , stock dove , various Rail types and Crane home. The area is for fish and sea eagles and various duck and merganser species , including Wigeon , Pintail , Shoveler , Pochard , Tufted Duck , Common Merganser , Red-breasted Merganser and Smew staging and wintering area. The oxbow lakes are the habitat of the Elbe beaver .

The nature reserve is predominantly surrounded by agricultural land , some of which extend into the nature reserve. To the west it borders on the Elbe, to the north on forests and in the northeast also on the town of Klieken .
