The Riss is a nature reserve in the towns of Jessen (Elster) and Annaburg in the district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0002 is 91.2  hectares in size. It is almost congruent with the FFH area "Klödener Riss". The area has been under protection since 1967 (date of regulation: September 11, 1967). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Wittenberg district.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Lutherstadt Wittenberg in the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve . It protects an oxbow river of the Elbe between Gehmen and Klöden as well as an adjoining, narrow bank area. The backwater is completely separated from the river dynamics of the Elbe by dykes and is only fed by groundwater and seepage water and a few ditches .

Aquatic plants such as the common swimming fern and crab claws as well as crab claw, frog bite and pond rose communities often settle in the oxbow lake. Swaths of water , swamp wolf milk and stiff winter cress as well as Schlankseggenriede settle along the banks . The oxbow lake is often accompanied by shrubbery of gray willows and alder fragments. There are also remains of the hardwood floodplain made of common oak and white elm .

The nature reserve is home to a regionally significant occurrence of the Elbe beaver . However, the population is slowly decreasing. For different species of birds including Red Kite , Black Kite , Lesser Spotted Woodpecker , Wryneck , kingfisher , wagtail , Whinchat , Beutelmeise , Corn Bunting , sand martins , red-backed shrike and the great gray shrike , the nature reserve is a habitat. 15 species of fish, including asp and bitterling , were found in the rift . Amphibians and reptiles are u. a. represented by the sea ​​frog , fire-bellied toad and grass snake.

The nature reserve often borders on agricultural areas . Between Kleindröben and Klöden it borders on a forest area in the east. Public roads cross the area in several places.
