Wilhelm Feuerherdt (born June 6, 1895 in Leipzig , † July 10, 1932 in Dessau ) was a Dessau social democrat and anti-fascist .

Life

Wilhelm Feuerherdt was born in Leipzig on June 6, 1895. After attending school he had learned a locksmith and mechanical engineer and worked as an engineer in the Dessau Junkers factories. During the First World War he served in a sea battalion.

Feuerherdt was politically involved in the Social Democratic Party , in the general free employee union, and he led a hundred in the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold .

On a return trip from a rally in Zerbst on the night of July 9th to 10th, 1932, in front of the Schweizerhaus in Dessau-Ziebigk , a dispute broke out between his Reichsbannergruppe and a group of National Socialists who had their hangout in the Schweizerhaus. An exchange of words turned into a solid brawl and there were exchanges of fire and attacks with cutting and stabbing weapons.

That night a total of eight men, including five other members of his Reichsbannergruppe, some seriously injured, were admitted to a Dessau hospital. Wilhelm Feuerherdt died that night from serious stab wounds in the face and back.

Resting place at cemetery 1 in Dessau

On July 13, 1932, his body was laid out in the garden of the Dessau SPD house Tiovoli and then thousands of hitchhikers followed the coffin on the way to the crematorium in Heidestrasse. The urn grave is located at Dessau Cemetery I. The public prosecutor's office initiated an investigation, which reflects the growing adjustment of civil servants. On September 23, 1932, the investigation into the circumstances of Feuerherdt's death was ended and declared inconclusive. It was also declared that the National Socialists had acted in self-defense and that the guilt for what had happened lay with the Reichsbanner people. The first public prosecutor Erich Lämmler informed the widow that her husband was responsible for his own death through “an unlawful attack on others”.
