Wilhelm Gessel

Wilhelm Maximilian Gessel (born February 28, 1933 in Munich ; † March 7, 2006 in Augsburg ) was a German patrologist .

Life

Gessel studied from 1952 to 1957 at the university in Freising and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising in 1958 . He worked from 1958 to 1961 as Kaplan and his doctorate in 1965 at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with a thesis on the Eucharist teachings of Augustine of Hippo to Dr. theol.

Gessel completed his habilitation in 1973 at the University of Munich with an investigation into Origen's theology of prayer . Between 1976 and 1979 he taught as professor for church history and patrology at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg and from the winter semester 1979/1980 as professor for ancient church history, patrology and Christian archeology at the University of Augsburg . In 2001 he retired .

He was editor of the Patristic Department of the Library of Greek Literature .
