Wilhelm Hugues (born July 28, 1905 in Carlshafen , † December 18, 1971 in Hümme ) was a German sculptor and painter .

Life

Hugues had Huguenot ancestors. He began an apprenticeship as a carpenter. He then studied architecture, painting, wood and stone sculpture at the Kassel School of Applied Arts from 1925 to 1930 under Professor Hans Sautter . In 1937, under the rule of the National Socialists , he was banned from working and exhibiting. Hugues was a soldier and was released from captivity in 1949.

After the Second World War he lived and worked in what is now the Hofgeismar district of Hümme , where he converted his house into an artist's workshop. Many of his works were created here, especially wood, stone and plaster sculptures but also metal sculptures , linocuts , oil paintings and watercolor paintings .

In 1950, he created a memorial stone for the prisoners shot by the Gestapo for the memorial in the former Breitenau concentration camp in North Hesse , depicting a grieving woman.
