Wilhelm Kirchner (agricultural scientist)

Wilhelm Kirchner (born July 9, 1848 in Göttingen , † August 22, 1921 in Leipzig ) was a German agricultural scientist.

Live and act

Kirchner studied agriculture in Göttingen and Halle / S since 1871. and received his doctorate in 1874 under Bernhard Tollens at the University of Göttingen with an agricultural chemical thesis on plant slime. He then worked for two years as an assistant to Julius Kühn at the Agricultural Institute at the University of Halle. In 1876 he was appointed as a dairy consultant and head of a newly founded experimental station for dairy farming in Kiel. From 1879 to 1889 he worked again as an associate professor for agriculture at the University of Halle. During this time his most important scientific main work, a " Handbuch der Milchwirtschaft ", of which seven editions had appeared by 1922, was created.

In 1889 Kirchner was appointed director of the Agricultural Institute at the University of Göttingen. But already in 1890 he accepted a call as full professor and director at the Agricultural Institute of the University of Leipzig . As the successor to Adolph Blomeyer, he worked here until 1920.

Kirchner has comprehensively reorganized and expanded the Agricultural Institute in Leipzig, including setting up a test field and creating a demonstration garden for plants. In Leipzig, too, the focus of his teaching and research activities was on the dairy industry . Like Julius Kühn , however, he viewed agricultural science as an inseparable unit. That is why he has made notable contributions in the fields of crop production, fertilizer theory and agricultural management theory. From 1897 to 1914 he published twelve issues of the "Mitteilungen des Landwirtschaftliches Institut der Universität Leipzig". Through his teaching and research activities, he has sustainably increased the academic reputation and the status of agricultural science at the University of Leipzig. Kirchner, Privy Councilor since 1895, was elected Rector of Leipzig University in 1899.
