Wilhelm Martin (1933)

Wilhelm Martin (born June 20, 1876 in Quakenbrück , † March 10, 1954 in The Hague ) was a Dutch art historian .

William Martin grew from 1877 in Leiden , where his father Karl Martin Professor of Geology at the local university was. From 1894 to 1899 he studied in Leiden and received his doctorate there in 1901 with a thesis on the painter Gerard Dou . From 1901 he worked for the Mauritshuis in The Hague as deputy director under Abraham Bredius ; from 1909 to 1945 he was director of the museum himself. From 1907 to 1946 Martin also taught as an associate professor for art history at Leiden University. In 1935 he also became head of the university's graphic collection. From 1934 to 1954 he was director of the Mesdag Collection in The Hague.
