Wilhelm Meves

Wilhelm Meves , also Wilhelm Mewes (born June 6, 1848 in Braunschweig ; † August 26, 1908 there ) was a German actor .

Life

The son of a mechanic was a student at the community school on Wilhelmstrasse before he moved to the Martino-Katharineum to prepare for theology studies. After dropping out of school prematurely, he took acting lessons from Carl Schultes , who was the chief director at the Braunschweiger Hoftheater. Meves made his debut on May 21, 1866 at the Tivoli Theater in Lübeck as "Kreiser Schöffel" in Poacher . Engagements followed in Elberfeld, Freiburg / Breisgau (1867–69), Königsberg (1869–71) and Halle (1871/72). In 1872 he moved to the Braunschweig Court Theater, to which he belonged until his retirement in 1906. The versatile mime mastered both the serious and the humorous character roles, including Iago , Falstaff , Nathan , Faust and Caligula. Meves was also active as a stage writer. He wrote the libretti for two operas by the Brunswick composer Max Clarus . He edited plays and wrote song texts in Low German dialect. His fairy tale poem The Water Mermaids was set to music by Franz Abt .
