Wilhelm Pieper (politician)

Wilhelm "Willi" Pieper (born January 16, 1918 in Emmerich ; † December 27, 2007 in Emmerich am Rhein ) was a German local and state politician of the CDU .

Life

Pieper attended elementary school and then entered the postal service. During the Second World War he was a soldier. After his return from Soviet captivity, he returned to the postal service. From 1950 to 1960 he was chairman of the German Postal Union in Emmerich.

In 1950 Pieper became a member of the CDU and a year later played a key role in founding the Junge Union . From 1951 to 1954 he was the spokesman for the Junge Union and from 1952 deputy chairman of the CDU local party. He was also a member of the party's district executive since 1951.

From 1956 to 1989 he was a member of the city council and was elected mayor for nine years in 1961. It was very committed to the construction of the Rhine bridge and the completion of the motorway. He also accompanied the formation of the new Kleve district . From 1966 he was a member of the board of the Association of Cities for North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1971 Vice President of the Association of Cities and Municipalities for North Rhine-Westphalia.

Pieper was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from July 13, 1954 to May 27, 1975 . In the third to seventh electoral terms, he represented the constituency of Rees as a directly elected MP.

He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Haus des Deutschen Ostens Foundation .

Honors

In 1986 Pieper was awarded the Ring of Honor of the City of Emmerich, and in 1988 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1993 the Kleve district received the honorary gift. Pieper Emmericher became an honorary citizen on December 11, 2007 .
