The son of a wig maker first attended a community school and then the private educational institution of Dr. Günther in Braunschweig. After successfully completing his degree, he began to study “theater painting” at the Braunschweig Collegium Carolinum . From 1874 to 1883 he worked for the court theater painter Jean Robert Martin in Hanover . From 1883 he worked at the court theater in Stuttgart, from 1890 until his retirement in 1913 in a permanent position. Even after his retirement he was used again during the First World War ; At that time he was considered one of the most famous theater painters in Germany. The Württemberg King Wilhelm II appointed Plappert professor and councilor. In 1925 the Württemberg Art Association organized a memorial exhibition in his honor.

All of Plappert's theater paintings in Stuttgart were destroyed in the fire in the court theater in 1902 and in the Second World War. In the Ravensburg Konzerthaus , however, there are 70 large-format rear brochures, 35 set arches, 11 soffit pieces and 145 attachment pieces that were purchased for guest performances on the Stuttgart stage in the years 1902–1910 and are probably all due to Wilhelm Plappert.
