Wilhelm Renfordt

Wilhelm Renfordt (born May 7, 1889 in Altena , † 1950 in Osnabrück ) was a German painter.

Life

Renfordt lived in Osnabrück from 1892. There he attended the Ratsgymnasium Osnabrück and obtained his Abitur in 1908. He then went to Munich to study, but moved to Kassel after just one semester.

Renfordt studied at the Kassel Academy, which he graduated with the state examination. In 1912 Renfordt received a scholarship to spend a year at the Villa Romana. When the First World War broke out in 1914, Renfordt came immediately to the Western Front and was wounded in French captivity in 1917, from which he was only released in 1920.

He settled in Osnabrück and became an important figure in the local art scene. His students included u. a. Franz Josef Langer (1916–1981), Karl Allöder (1898–1981), Thomas A. Krüger (1918–1984) and Ursula Daphi (1923–2013).

Renfordt was a member of the Reich Association of Fine Artists of Germany and the Association of Westphalian Artists and Art Friends until 1933, when these were dissolved by the NSDAP .

Renfordt joined the SS in 1934 (most recently SS-Untersturmführer) and in 1937 the NSDAP. In 1938, on Renfordt's initiative and with the support of the SS, the "Städtische Förderklassen für Bildnerisches Gestalten (Laienschaften)" were founded in Osnabrück Castle . a. Tegtmeier, Langer, Krüger, Daphie, Petiscus, Hobein - brought forth.

In 1943, at the age of 54, Renfordt was called up for military service. In 1944/45 Renfordt was a member of the Waffen SS and served as a disabled sports teacher in the hospital system (see SS personnel records in the BA Berlin). With a serious head injury, he was taken prisoner in 1945. For three years he sat behind barbed wire with an inadequately treated fractured skull.

Renfordt died in 1950 from the long-term effects of his head injury.

Works by Renfordt can be found in a large number of museums: in the Landesmuseum Münster, in the Vestisches Museum in Recklinghausen, in the Municipal Museum of Dortmund, in the Magistrate of Osnabrück.
