Herbert Wochinz (born November 15, 1925 in Villach ; † October 16, 2012 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian director and theater director .

Life, career

Wochinz attended grammar school in Villach and studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna from 1946 to 1949 . Wochinz played his first roles in the student theater "Studio der Hochschulen" in 1949/50. In 1955 he went to Paris , the then European “theater capital” and a center of the avant-garde . There he attended the pantomime School of Etienne Decroux and had partially resistant contacts with, among others Marcel Marceau , Samuel Beckett , Eugene Ionesco , Jean Cocteau or Jean Genet . From 1956 he worked as an actor and director in Vienna ( Theater der Courage ), where he founded the Theater am Fleischmarkt in 1958 . Here he mainly dedicated himself to first performances of pieces by the French avant-garde and worked with actors such as Klaus Kinski , Bibiana Zeller and Georg Bucher as well as set designers such as Wolfgang Hutter , Josef Mikl and Wander Bertoni .

In 1961 he founded the Komödienspiele Porcia in Spittal an der Drau , which he directed until 1990. Here he presented comedies from world literature in purist productions , often in translations by HC Artmann , whose black comedy No Pepper for Cermak he scheduled in the opening season. From 1968 to 1992 he was the director of the Klagenfurt City Theater , which he made into a “theater for all Carinthians” with a varied program between classic and modern. The most prominent actors and singers he hired included Mirjana Irosch, Helga Papouschek, Felix Dvorak, Harald Serafin, and others. a.

In 1991 he handed over the management of the Komödienspiele Porcia to Tamás Ferkay . In 1992 he handed over the management of the Klagenfurt City Theater to Dietmar Pflegerl and largely withdrew from cultural life.
