Wilhelm Schloemilch

Wilhelm Schloemilch (born September 19, 1870 in Leipzig , † July 8, 1939 in Schmöckwitz near Berlin) was a German electrical engineer.

Life

As the son of a bank director, Wilhelm Schloemilch received a good education, did an apprenticeship at a machine factory for agricultural equipment and initially worked for a manufacturer of measuring and precision equipment.

From 1890 to 1893 Schloemilch studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt , probably with Erasmus Kittler . After completing his military service, he worked for a few months in the Berlin machine laboratory of AEG from 1894 and then for the following six years with the Berlin electricity works.

On August 1, 1901, Wilhelm Schloemilch joined the radio telegraphic department of AEG in the Oberspree cable works to devote himself to RF research. This is where the Slaby - Arco radio system was developed. In 1903, at the instigation of the state, this department of AEG was merged with the corresponding department of Siemens to form the Society for Wireless Telegraphy mbH ( Telefunken ). Here Schloemilch was in charge of receiver development until 1907, where he (at the same time as Reginald Aubrey Fessenden ) developed an electrolytic diode, the Schloemilch cell . This was one of the first detectors for electromagnetic waves, which exceeded the previously used wave detector Coherer in sensitivity. However, it was soon replaced by the Lieben tube .

Schloemilch also devised the use of feedback to de-attenuate receivers and, together with Otto von Bronk, the reflex circuit .

He developed a circuit for setting up an extinguishing spark transmitter with which Telefunken was able to demonstrate the first wireless telephony transmission over a distance of 36 kilometers between Berlin and Nauen in 1906 .
