Wilhelm Schneider (politician, 1926)

Wilhelm Schneider (born July 22, 1926 in Wesel ; † November 27, 2007 there ) was a German local politician . He was mayor of Wesel from 1979 to 1984 and from 1989 to 1994, and was made an honorary citizen of the city in 2006.

Career

Schneider was born in Wesel in 1926 and grew up in nearby Lackhausen . From 1969 to 1994 he was a member of the Wesel City Council for the SPD , and between 1984 and 1999 he was a member of the district council of the Wesel district . In 1975 he was first elected deputy mayor and in 1979 the city's first mayor. He carried out this office on a voluntary basis and not on a full-time basis. Until the 1990s, it was not the mayor of North Rhine-Westphalia but the city director who was the head of the city administration. In addition to his role as mayor, Schneider carried out other activities and was chairman of the postal union's staff council for 16 years and chairman of the Wesel boxing club from 1977 to 1992. During his time as mayor, he was seen as a promoter of culture and sport, and he also supported people with disabilities, in this regard he was significantly involved in the establishment of the parents' self-help in Wesel- Bislich . After the end of his first five-year term, he was again in the position of deputy mayor from 1984 to 1989 and then from 1989 to 1994 first mayor again. From 1994 to 1999 he was deputy district administrator at the district level.

Schneider was a bearer of the Federal Cross of Merit and was awarded the ring of honor by the city of Wesel in September 2000. On his 80th birthday he was given honorary citizenship in Wesel. In his former place of residence Wesel-Lackhausen a street was named after him.
