Wilhelm Simon (geologist)

Wilhelm Simon (born July 15, 1915 in Cronenberg , † February 24, 1993 in Heidelberg ) was a German geologist and paleontologist .

From 1934 Simon studied geology at the University of Cologne , the TH Aachen and the University of Frankfurt , where he received his doctorate in 1939. For his dissertation he was doing field research in Andalusia. He was then called up as a soldier and from 1942 was a military geologist in Berlin-Karlshorst . He completed his habilitation in Berlin on the Paleozoic in the Seville area . From 1945 to 1949 he was a Soviet prisoner of war. In 1951 he completed his habilitation again at Clausthal University of Technology and was a professor there from 1954 to 1956. He was then a full professor of geology and palaeontology at the TU Berlin and from 1959 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

In 1966 he became a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and in 1962 of the Leopoldina . He was editor and from 1986 honorary member of the Association of Friends of Mineralogy and Geology.

Reinhart Kraatz is one of his students .
