Wilhelm Tafel (born February 11, 1868 in Gerlafingen / Switzerland ; † November 1, 1931 in Breslau , Lower Silesia Province ) was a German factory owner and from 1914 professor for metallurgical machinery and rolling mills at the Technical University of Wroclaw .

Life

Wilhelm Tafel was born as the third son of Julius Tafel and Bertha Kinzelbach in Gerlafingen, Switzerland. After his parents returned to Nuremberg, he completed his Abitur at the Realgymnasium in Nuremberg. He then studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich . In 1888 he became a member of the Corps Vitruvia Munich. After completing his studies, he completed an internship at the Witkowitz ironworks for several months in 1892 .

After his father retired in 1891 from the ironworks J. Tafel & Co., which he founded in 1876, his sons Wilhelm and Hermann followed him in the management in 1900.

In 1913, Wilhelm Tafel resigned as director of the company in order to take up the chair of a full professor for metallurgical machinery and rolling mill technology at the Technical University of Breslau.

His teaching activity there was interrupted between 1914 and 1916 due to military service. He was then appointed to the War Office in Berlin and spent the last six months of the war as a commercial attaché at the Bavarian Embassy in Vienna. After the end of the war, Tafel returned to Breslau and developed a wide range of activities at the Technical University. So he created Germany's first rolling mill research institute there . His research on rolling technology and the extensive literary production on this subject that resulted from it received considerable recognition in the professional world. His books have been translated into several languages ​​and the TH Munich awarded him an honorary doctorate. From 1926 to 1928 he was rector of the Technical University of Wroclaw.
