Wilhelm Telle (composer)

Friedrich Wilhelm Telle (born September 9, 1798 in Berlin ; † May 10, 1862 there ) was a German pianist and composer as well as music director at various theaters.

Life

The son of the ballet master and choreographer Constantin Michel Telle initially received pianistic training from Franz Lauska and learned music theory from Joseph Augustin Gürrlich. After his first public appearance as a pianist in Berlin in 1816, he then went to Paris, where he studied composition with Luigi Cherubini until 1819 .

In 1820 Telle returned to Berlin, where he premiered his first works at the Royal Drama Theater , where his father was a ballet master and choreographer: on January 12th his ballet "Der Müller" and on January 15th August his opera “Das Schützenfest”. When the new Königsstädtische Theater opened in Berlin in 1824 , Telle received her first contract as the second music director under Karl Friedrich Cerf and the opera director Wilhelm Ehlers . Just one year later, he and Ehlers moved to the old theater in Magdeburg, where Telle worked as music director until 1827. During the interregnum there in May 1825, Telle was part of the acting theater management together with Wilhelm August Wohlbrück . In the same year, on December 23rd, his opera “Husarenliebe”, based on a text by Karl Friedrich Müchler, was premiered in Magdeburg .

In 1827 Telle moved to the Aachen Theater , where he was again employed as music director, first under Heinrich Eduard Bethmann and then under Joseph August Röckel . He composed a festival overture especially for its introduction, which was premiered on April 28, 1828. From November 1, 1830, after a hapless year, Telle was taken over as theater director by Karl Fischer in Aachen. Here he initially engaged his father Constantin as ballet master and choreographer for one season. After the theater got financial difficulties and the theater management was taken over on July 5, 1831 by a stock corporation under the leadership of James Cockerill , Telle was transferred back as music director. As such, he premiered his opera “Rafael” on December 22, 1831.

A year later he left Aachen and did not appear again until 1834/1835 as Kapellmeister at the Theater am Kärntnertor . From 1840 Telle was then appointed music director at the Bamberg Theater and from 1843 in the same function at the old Kiel City Theater. In 1845 he returned to Berlin, where he published a few more compositions and died on May 10, 1862.
