Wilhelm Heinrich Theodor (von) Schiefler , also: Guilherme Henrique Theodoro Schiefler (born March 5, 1828 in Hanover , † 1884 in Petrópolis , Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) was a German-Brazilian writer , teacher and linguist .

Life

Wilhelm Heinrich Theodor Schiefler was born on March 5, 1828 as the son of the chamber auditor August Schiefler and his wife. Tovothe born in Hanover. He was married to Sophie Alviene v. Lasperg and had several sons.

From 1848 he studied law at the University of Göttingen . During his time in Göttingen he became a member of the Corps Hannovera Göttingen . After the first state examination, he took up a position as a royal Hanoverian official assessor and received his doctorate in law at the University of Göttingen . After working as a judge for a few years, he moved to what was then the Empire of Brazil in 1853 with the intention of getting involved in the colonization of the country. However, the results did not meet his expectations and he preferred to specialize in teaching languages.

He then worked for several years as a teacher of Latin , Greek , German and English at various private schools in the country and even as a reader for Emperor Pedro II of Brazil .

In 1858 he was appointed professor of Greek linguistics at the imperial Colégio Pedro II in Rio de Janeiro. The Colégio Pedro II was the highest and most prestigious school in the country. In addition, he got a professorship for German language at the Instituto comercial do Rio de Janeiro in 1860 , where he taught at the same time.

In 1860 his work on the grammar of the German language "Grammatica da lingua alemã" appeared in Portuguese , which included a new method for translating and learning the German language. He also translates Portuguese works into German and German works into Portuguese. In 1865 he published his Portuguese translation of the German-language “ Greek grammar ” by Raphael Kühner . In 1873 his German translation of the geographical description of Brazil by the Brazilian writer Joaquim Manuel de Macedo was published by FA Brockhaus in Leipzig . His translation of this work was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Vienna in the Industriepalast in 1873 .
