Wilhelm Urban (born September 14, 1793 in Munich ; † February 28, 1833 there ) was a German actor and librettist .

Life

Urban appeared on November 28, 1813 for the first time as "Fridolin" in Holbein's play of the same name in a larger role on the court stage of his hometown. From 1814 until his death he was on this stage. Although he was small in stature, he impressed as a young lover with his lively, black eyes and his pure, melodious voice. He had a sense of the great and was distinguished by artistic seriousness, great intimacy and delicacy of conception. Among other things, he played the title role in Goethe's Tasso and Faust , as well as the Pylades in Iphigenie , and also “Bassanio” in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice , but above all he shone as Hamlet , whose monologue in the third act he is said to have uttered unsurpassable. Frequent guest appearances, e.g. B. in Berlin (1817), Vienna (1823) and Hamburg made his name famous outside of Munich, but the Viennese seem to have liked it little, according to the records in Costenoble's diaries. Urban also tried his hand at being a poet. He wrote a “Dramatic Fantasy Painting” in one act under the title Das Awakening Conscience , which was performed in Berlin on July 12, 1817 with music by Lindpaintner , and provided a free adaptation of Shakespeare's Die Komödie der Errungen , which was published in 1832 on the Munich stage went. He died young at the age of 39.
