Wilhelm Weber (Councilor of Commerce)

Bernhard Louis Wilhelm Hermann Weber (born October 26, 1857 in Nordhausen , † February 27, 1934 in Harburg-Wilhelmsburg ) was an honorary doctorate from the Georg-August University of Göttingen and a councilor in Harburg on the Elbe .

Life

Wilhelm Weber had been head of the Harburg branch of the Hannoversche Bank, founded in 1856, from 1894 . He supported the flourishing industry in Harburg and was appointed to various supervisory boards . From 1912 to 1932 Weber was chairman of the Harburg Chamber of Commerce . At Weber's initiative, the Süderelbe was bridged between Hamburg and Harburg in 1899 with the construction of the Old Harburg Elbe Bridge . Weber was also instrumental in the successful negotiations of the Köhlbrand Treaty of 1908. It was only through these contracts that the prerequisites for the modern development of Harburg harbor were created. The University of Göttingen awarded him an honorary doctorate for his social and charitable commitment . Weavers were buried in the old Harburg cemetery . The family grave is an imposing structure made of black granite .

Honors

The Georg August University of Göttingen awarded Weber an honorary doctorate. In 1932 the city of Harburg-Wilhelmsburg granted him honorary citizenship and Kaistraße was renamed Wilhelm-Weber-Straße.
