Johann Wilhelm Emil von Busch (born February 15, 1868 in Blexen ; † April 27, 1940 in Oldenburg ) was a German editor-in-chief who was interested in art.

Education and life

The son of the customs officer Eilert von Busch (* 1836) attended the high school in Blexen and then the Evangelical Teachers' College in Oldenburg (1882–1886). After completing his training, he taught at the schools in Deichhausen , Varel , Neuenwege and Edewecht . In 1888 he went to the city boys' school in Oldenburg and in 1894 became a teacher at the Cäcilienschule .

Wilhelm von Busch was married twice. On June 1, 1895, he married Betty Katharine Begemann (1870–1934) and after her death, on October 11, 1935, he married Gertrud Anne Johanne Ficke (1893–1968). The son Rudolf (1900–1956), who came from the first marriage, became a lawyer and was a member of the Oldenburg State Parliament in 1946 .

Journalistic work

The teaching activity could not satisfy the talented and ambitious Wilhelm von Busch in the long run. So he became a part-time employee of the feature pages of " Nachrichten für Stadt und Land ", whose editor Oskar Scharf (1863–1937) soon became aware of him and promoted him. In 1897, Wilhelm von Busch decided to give up teaching and become a journalist. In the spring of 1898 he left school and after a year as a volunteer at Berlin newspapers took over the local editorial office of the "Nachrichten für Stadt und Land". In 1904 he became editor-in-chief of the paper, which he headed until 1933 and made a decisive contribution during this time.

Due to his professional position and his wide-ranging interests, Wilhelm von Busch secured a key position in the cultural life of the city and the country. He played an important role in the homeland movement that flourished after the turn of the century and in 1913 was one of the editors of the representative collection of "Local Studies of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg". In 1913, through the mediation of Wilhelm von Busch, Otto Pankok's first collective exhibition took place in the Oncken art dealer in Oldenburg . This year Otto Pankok worked in the artists' colony Dötlingen and from here he attended to all exhibitions in Oldenburg.

Memberships

As a member of the provisional theater management, he was instrumental in rescuing the theater after 1918 and taking it over under municipal sponsorship. Among other things, he was chairman of the Association of East Frisian-Oldenburg writers, co-founder and board member of the "Literary Association" and board member of the Oldenburger Kunstverein . He was also a member of the Oldenburg City Council for several years.
