Wilhelmshaven Gorch Fock Marathon
The Wilhelmshaven Gorch-Fock-Marathon is a marathon in Wilhelmshaven that has been held annually in May / June since 2006. The event also includes a half marathon and a 10-kilometer run as well as various school and children's runs. The event is organized by the Evangelical Working Group for Soldiers Care (EAS) .
Relation to the Navy
The event is closely related to the German Navy and the Bundeswehr (Wilhelmshaven is the largest location of the German Navy and the second largest location of the Bundeswehr). The race is named after the Gorch Fock , the sailing training ship of the German Navy. Since 2010, the run has also been rated as the Bundeswehr championship in the marathon.
route
The route with start and finish in downtown Wilhelmshaven has to be completed twice in the marathon. It first leads through the pedestrian zone out of the city to the Jade Bay . There you walk directly on or on the dike. A short part of the marathon route is led through the (otherwise not publicly accessible) naval base Heppenser Groden .
