Willem Albarda

Johan Willem Albarda (born June 5, 1877 in Leeuwarden , † April 19, 1957 in The Hague ) was a Dutch politician (SDAP).

Albarda studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University in Delft. In 1897 he founded the Delft section of the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiders Partij (SDAP) together with Theo van der Waerden. From 1915 to 1927 he was a member of the Council of The Hague.

In 1913 Albarda was elected to the Dutch lower house, to which he was a member until 1939. From 1925 to 1939 he was also the chairman of the SDAP parliamentary group as successor to Pieter Jelles Troelstra .

In 1939 Albarda joined the De Geer II cabinet as Minister of Labor . On the occasion of the German occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940, Albarda fled with the rest of the Dutch government to Great Britain, where he was part of the Dutch government in exile until 1945.

From 1945 to 1952 Albarda was a member of the Dutch Council of State ( Raad van State ).
