Willi Gohl

Willi Gohl (born December 23, 1925 in Gossau ZH ; † February 16, 2010 in Küsnacht ZH ) was a Swiss conductor , choirmaster and composer .

Life

Willi Gohl, son of the teacher Walter Gohl, first trained as a teacher. He later studied piano and school music at the Zurich University of Music and trained as a conductor at home and abroad. He was solo harpsichordist in the Zurich Chamber Music Orchestra.

After ten years of teaching at what was then the Zurich Girls' School, he devoted himself exclusively to the profession of musician. In 1954 he founded the Zurich Singing Circle, with which he took part in numerous open singings, symposia, concerts and events of the Europa Cantat Federation. From 1959 to 1986 Gohl directed the music school and conservatory in Winterthur, which became one of the most important music academies. In 1969 he received the prize from the Carl Heinrich Ernst Art Foundation in Winterthur . Gohl became known above all for his open singing throughout Switzerland, which was often broadcast on the radio, as well as the symphony concerts with commentary. Gohl was first president and later honorary president of the Swiss Music Council. 1986 Willi Gohl received the Hans-Georg Nägeli Medal from the City of Zurich.

In 1975 Gohl and Anne Diekmann published “Das Grosse Liederbuch” (Das Grosse Liederbuch) with 204 German folk and children's songs for Diogenes Verlag . It was illustrated by Tomi Ungerer . His best-known canon, “A bright morning without worries”, has entered Swiss song stock.

In 1952 Gohl married the singer Verena Müller. The two often performed together: she as a soloist in his choir concerts, he as a pianist in their recitals. The two received the City of Winterthur's Culture Prize in 1980 . Her three daughters and two sons are all musically active as well. His son Michael is a recognized choir director and director of the music school in Zollikon . Teese Gohl works in the USA as a composer, conductor and producer for film music. Käthi Gohl works internationally as a cellist.

Willi Gohl spent his last lifetime in a care facility in Küsnacht, where he died at the age of 84.
