Willi Hofferbert

Willi Hofferbert (born November 16, 1896 in Darmstadt ; † June 19, 1972 there ) was a German painter of the 20th century.

Life

After finishing school and working in an architecture office, Willi Hofferbert attended the Mainz School of Applied Arts from 1912 . The training was interrupted by participation in the First World War. From 1919 he studied at the newly founded Darmstadt School of Applied Arts with Christian Heinrich Kleukens and Kay H. Nebel, and in 1921 at the Academy for Graphics and Book Trade in Leipzig , where he was a master student of Hugo Steiner-Prag .

From 1922 Hofferbert was a stage painter for Kurt Kempin under Gustav Hartung at the Hessisches Landestheater Darmstadt , from 1924 he worked as a freelance painter.

Willi Hofferbert became a member of the Darmstadt group and participated in its exhibitions until it was dissolved in 1933. Study trips took him to Spain and France during this time . From 1941 to 1945 he worked in the police service due to the war. An air raid on Darmstadt in 1944 destroyed the entire factory that had been built up until then.

After the end of the war, Willi Hofferbert was one of the founders of the New Darmstadt Secession , of which he was managing director from 1951 to 1953. From 1947 to 1962 he taught color theory and color design at the Werkkunstschule Darmstadt .

After 1945, Willi Hofferbert's art was primarily dedicated to watercolors , experimenting with this technique and arriving at very independent results by including wax primers.
