Willi Kaufmann (born September 7, 1908 , † 1978 ) was a German composer and music inspector for the German People's Police .

Life

Kaufmann attended the Dresden Conservatory . From April 1937 to October 1939 he began studying music as a master at the State University of Music in Berlin and was appointed music master. As head of the music corps of the 52nd Rifle Regiment , Kaufmann took part in Operation Barbarossa and was captured in 1941 near the town of Kopys in Belarus . Until 1947 he was a Soviet prisoner of war. While in captivity, he founded music orchestras in several Soviet prisoner-of-war camps. As the leader of a camp orchestra, he musically provided the foundation meeting of the National Committee for Free Germany .

The Colonel Music Master of the GDR People's Police trained a Chinese army music train in Beijing at the end of 1954 , for which he was awarded the medal "Hero of the Chinese People's Liberation Army".

On October 1, 1948, the orchestra of the German People's Police was founded in Berlin as the first uniformed wind orchestra after the end of World War II . Music director Willi Kaufmann became chief conductor and also music inspector for the German People's Police. In April 1958 the name was changed to the Central Orchestra of the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR. In 1960 he gave up the leadership, but kept the post of music in-chief of the People's Police. His successor was Wolfgang Arendt and until 1990 Helmut Sommer.

Kaufmann was a member of the SED . Within the People's Police, he held the rank of colonel. In 1958 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
