career

The striker Willi Overdieck came to the round in 1953/54 from the black and yellow from the Volkspark, from SpVg Marl , to Westfalia Herne in the 2nd League West. From the ranks of the Westphalian regional league team, Reinhold Wosab also moved to Borussia Dortmund in the Oberliga West in 1962 . Overdieck scored eleven goals in 26 games in the 2nd division alongside Günter Grandt (28 games / 28 goals) and Alfred Ilmer (30 games / 16 goals). The team from the stadium at Schloss Strünkede took second place and thus achieved promotion to the Oberliga West. The 2-1 away win on May 30, 1954 at SG Wattenscheid 09 was of decisive importance. In the first year in the Oberliga West, 1954/55, the man from Marl made 27 missions and scored seven goals when they were just about to stay in the league. From the 1955/56 round, Fritz Langner, a new man took over the coaching position and with Hans Tilkowski , a new goalkeeper stood in the case of Westfalia. Center forward Overdieck scored 21 of the 51 round goals of Westfalia and thus took third place in the list of goalscorers in the West behind Alfred Niepieklo (24) and Alfred Kelbassa (22). Dortmund won the championship with 78:36 goals and Herne came 13th with 51:60 goals. On November 6, 1955, the attacker scored three goals for a 4-2 win in the home game against Rot-Weiss Essen. His direct opponent was center runner Heinz Wewers , a proven expert in the defensive center. As a two-time goalscorer, he distinguished himself in the successes against Preußen Münster (3-0) and 1. FC Köln (3-1) as well as in the 2-7 defeat at FC Schalke 04.

When he was able to celebrate the championship in the west with his teammates in the 1958/59 series, the young center forward Gerhard Clement acted as a successful striker (30 games / 28 goals) in the attacking center of the surprise master and Overdieck was convincing in the right defender position. His partners in defense were Willi Kellermann (20 games) and Erich Ketheler (10 games). In the two final rounds of Westfalia in 1959 and 1960 (as runner-up in the west), the long-time top performer completed all 13 games against Hamburger SV, Kickers Offenbach, Tasmania 1900 Berlin, Karlsruher SC and Borussia Neunkirchen. His last league game he completed on March 28, 1963, a catch-up game against Viktoria Cologne. With goalkeeper Tilkowski, the defender couple Overdieck and Kellermann, and center runner Alfred Pyka , the core of the defense was formed in the 3: 3 draw. In the last year of the old league era, 1962/63, until April 1963 Fritz Silken was the coach .

For years, Willi Overdieck was one of the indispensable performers in the blue and white team at Westfalia Herne. In his early years as a dangerous center forward, later as a high-performance defender who had also caught the attention of national coach Sepp Herberger . He should get his chance for the international match against France on October 26, 1958 in Paris. “But a week before that (October 19: 3-0 win at home against penultimate STV Horst Emscher) he delivered a weak game under the eyes of Herberger,” remembers his teammate at the time, Horst Wandolek . “After the game, Herberger came to us in the locker room and greeted every single player, only he passed Willi without greeting or handshake. In plain English this meant: 'You are unloaded.' That's how it used to be. "

From 1963 he let his career at Delbrücker SC end.
