Willi Schwenkreis

Willi Schwenkreis , also Willy Schwenkreis , ( October 1, 1905 in Augsburg - November 18, 1983 in Karlsruhe ) was a German opera singer ( baritone ) and singing teacher .

Life

After his training in Munich he made his debut there in 1935 in a concert. From 1935 to 1937 he was engaged at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, from 1937 to 1938 at the Stadttheater Augsburg and from 1938 to 1941 at the Vienna Volksoper .

In 1941 he went to Leipzig to succeed Walter Zimmer at the Opera House, where he also worked as a singing teacher, where he stayed until 1955. In 1953 he sang there in the world premiere of the opera Wat Tyler by Alan Bush .

He had guest appearances in 1951 at the Schwerin State Theater and in 1955 at the Munich State Opera.

In 1955 he left the GDR and went to Karlsruhe to work as a teacher.

Major roles were the "Count" in The Marriage of Figaro , the "Pizarro" in Fidelio , the Flying Dutchman , the "Telramund" such as the "herald" in Lohengrin , the "John" in the Evangelimann of Wilhelm Kienzl , the "Achilles" in Penthesilea by Othmar Schoeck , the “ Cardillac ” in the opera by Paul Hindemith , the “Escamillo” in Carmen , the “Graf Westmoreland” in Sly by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari , the “Scarpia” in Tosca and “Boris Godunow”.

He was particularly successful as "Hans Sachs" in the Meistersinger , which he performed several times at the Vienna State Opera.

He was also very successful as a concert singer.

He was married to the mezzo-soprano Liesl Kurz .
