William George Ashmole (born September 27, 1891 in Winshill , † January 28, 1958 in Hitchin or 3rd quarter 1968 in Burton-upon-Trent ) was an English football player .

Career

Ashmole came to play in the Football League Second Division club Stockport County in 1913 , which had to face in the preseason as the table penultimate of the re-election for the league whereabouts. First used in the reserve team, he benefited on his debut on December 6, 1913 against Lincoln City from the fact that defender William Froehlich had missed his train. Ashmole, who had traveled to the game as a reserve, moved into the team on the left winger and scored the opening goal in the 3-0 away win. After he had scored both goals of his team in a 2-2 draw against Grimsby Town in his second outing on Boxing Day 1913 , he was part of the regular formation for the rest of the season, the previous left winger Norman Wood instead moved to the left half-forward position. By the end of the season he had scored eight goals in 21 league games and was associated with a club change because of his "consistently good game". Nevertheless, he was also part of the Stockport squad in the following season 1914/15 and came to another 16 league appearances, but lost his regular place to Ernie Lloyd in the half of the season .

At the end of the season, regular game operations were discontinued due to the First World War . Ashmole enrolled for military service in mid-1915 and joined a Derbyshire regiment. Until the resumption of regular league operations, he appeared as a guest player at Watford FC (1916, 5 games / 3 goals), West Ham United (1919, 2/0) and Port Vale (1919, 1/0). In February 1918 he was on the occasion of a charity game in Burton-upon-Trent a soldiers selection against an England selection (including Jesse Pennington , Jimmy Harrop , Jimmy Leach , Charlie Payne and Harold Edgley ) and scored in the 3-1 victory Goal.

In August 1919 Stockport County allowed him a free transfer and Ashmole joined Watford FC , who are playing in the Southern League . There he came in the course of the season but only to a competitive game (0-3 against Exeter City ) and left Watford at the end of the season in the direction of the Welsh club AFC Mardy playing in the Welsh section of the Southern League .
