William Henry Ball (born April 11, 1876 in West Derby , Liverpool , † 1929 ) was an English football player .

Career

Ball played for Rock Ferry in The Combination and had already signed a professional contract with New Brighton Tower in 1897 . However, this was not valid due to a registration error and gave Ball the opportunity to move to the Blackburn Rovers together with his teammate Ben Hulse in May 1897 . In his first season, the tough and hard-working right wing runner came to 17 appearances in the Football League First Division . In March 1898 he played with Blackburn in the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup against Newton Heath at Goodison Park , home of Everton FC . Those in charge of the host club were so impressed by his performance in the 2-1 defeat that he was promptly committed to the 1898/99 season. At Everton, however, he was unable to assert himself against players like Joe Blythe , Richard Boyle or Sam Wolstenholme in the runner row and remained without league use throughout the season.

In May 1899, his stay in Liverpool ended again and he moved to league rivals Notts County , with whom he reached third place in the First Division in 1900/01, the best championship result in the history of the club. After his sophomore year in Nottingham , he expressed his desire to return to Blackburn with the Rovers, a concern that Blackburn officials quickly heard after the departure of the right wing runner Jimmy Moir . In contrast to his first stay with the Rovers, however, this time he did not manage to establish himself in the team and played for the reserve team for most of the season. His last stop in professional football was Manchester United in the Second Division . For Manchester he was used in his four season assignments in the 1902/03 season in all three positions of the runner row, but he could not permanently displace anyone from the regular trio Alex Downie , Billy Griffiths and Walter Cartwright .
